The North Greene volleyball team made quick work of Happy Valley on Tuesday, picking up a 3-0 District 1-A win (25-10, 25-11, 25-18) in its final home game of the regular season.
“I was really pleased with the way we started. We had really good first and second sets, and then we got a little lazy in the third set,” North Greene coach Emaline Erwin said. “We tried some new things and that was important to see before the district tournament. Overall I’m happy with tonight.”
The Lady Huskies gave up the first points of the night, but after Matti Phillips served back-to-back aces the Lady Huskies were in control at 4-2.
Phillips, North Greene’s lone senior celebrated her senior night on Tuesday. She had a big night at the service line with six total aces, and finished the evening by moving to libero and running the back line.
“I’m proud of how Matti played tonight. This is my third year coaching her and I’ve gotten to watch her grow and become a great player for us,” Erwin said.
After Josie Graham put down a pair of kills from the left side and Tralyn Southerland landed a kill from the right the Lady Huskies were in front 10-4.
Southerland put North Greene in front 24-9 after a seven-point run at the service line that included three aces. Kallie Dobson had a block in the run and Phillips put down a kill.
North Greene finished with a 25-10 win in a set where they allowed just one attacking point.
Behind three aces from Phillips North Greene jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set.
That lead grew to 10-2 with kills from Phillips, Graham and Southerland and an ace from Chloe Keys.
Cadie McDevitt followed with three aces in a run that saw Southerland put down two more kills as the Lady Huskies’ lead grew to 18-3.
Missed swings allowed Happy Valley to close the gap, but McDevitt and Emily Crisp did land kills in the final stretch of the 25-11 win. Ten of Happy Valley’s 11 points were scored on North Greene errors.
The third set went back and forth to a 6-6 tie and Happy Valley took the lead at 7-6 when North Greene watched Macy Kendall’s serve fall to the floor.
Southerland immediately answered with a swing the Lady Warriors could not touch before Crisp gave North Greene the lead back at 8-7 on a kill from the left side. Dobson had a kill, McDevitt scored on an ace and Southerland killed one from the right side as the lead grew to 12-7.
Graham pounded a kill from the left side to put North Greene in front 16-11, and an ace by Keys made it 19-14.
North Greene finished out the 25-18 win with aces from Graham and McDevitt and a kill from McDevitt.
The Lady Huskies now turn their attention to the District 1-A Tournament which will be played at Happy Valley next week.
“We’re going to have to focus on having a good mentality going into the district. Sometimes we dig ourselves a hole and we can’t mentally dig out of it. We need to be focused on starting strong to give ourselves the best chance,” Erwin said.
