North Greene wrapped up the regular season on Thursday afternoon by sweeping Carter County foe Hampton in straight sets (25-11, 25-12, 25-7) in Jerome Woolsey Gymnasium.
“It feels really good to get that win. Especially against one of our conference rivals,” North Greene Head Coach Tanna Stansfield mentioned.
It was an easy night at the office for the Lady Huskies. North Greene never sensed any danger all night and only ever trailed by one point. The win wraps up the regular season with a 14-7 (5-3) record before next week’s District 1-1A Tournament begins. Coach Stansfield spoke about the importance of building confidence and momentum heading into the postseason.
“We’ve got a couple girls out with injuries so we’ve made some adjustments and thought this would be a good time to work on that and see what we’d be doing for next week for the tournament. Everybody swung well, passed well, served well, so that was really good to see for tournament time,” Stansfield explained.
The Lady Huskies jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set and never looked back. Josie Graham’s kill and Cadie McDevitt’s block made it a 13-5 advantage for North Greene. McDevitt’s spike landed in bounds and lifted the score to 18-11. Tralyn Southerland blocked an offensive attempt from Hampton and made it 20-11. The Lady Huskies finished on a lengthy run and ended the set on an ace from McDevitt, a kill from Kinlea Eastep, and a kill from Southerland. North Greene took a 1-0 lead with a 25-11 win in set one.
It didn’t take long for North Greene to get rolling in set two. The run continued with an 8-0 run to start the second set. Graham and McDevitt started with early offense and made it 2-0. Both Chloe’s got involved next. Chloe Grubb accomplished a kill and Chloe Keys served up an ace for a 6-0 lead. Graham’s kill ended the run with an 8-0 advantage.
Hampton called a timeout down 11-2, but it didn’t stop the rolling North Greene offense. Southerland and Eastep’s back-to-back kills extended the lead to 16-3. Keys dumped one over the net for a 17-4 lead and Heidi Trentham’s ace followed for an 18-4 lead. North Greene would go on to finish the set with a 25-12 win and led 2-0.
The third set was a breeze and ended rather quickly. Josie Graham’s first kill of the match made it 2-1 and Cadie McDevitt’s tip extended it to 5-1. Southerland’s kill set the score to 10-3 followed by McDevitt’s ace and Eastep’s kill for a 13-3 lead. Southerland added an ace and a kill and helped extend the lead to 22-7 down the stretch. Addi Dean served an ace from the back line and Josie Graham claimed a kill to help bring North Greene to match point. A Hampton mistake ended the set with North Greene winning 25-7.
The Lady Huskies rounded out the regular season with a sweep of District 1-1A rival Hampton in the end.
“Overall, everybody did so well. We were able to get everybody in and get an opportunity to play,” Coach Stansfield expressed.
Stansfield continued and explained the importance of finishing the season with a win over a rival opponent.
“Hampton is always a big rival. Whatever we’re playing, so it’s always good to get a win against a Carter County foe.”
North Greene finished the regular season with a 14-7 (5-3) record.
Graham led the unit with a team-high 7 kills. Southerland added 6 kills and Cadie McDevitt had a team-high 4 aces.
