WISE, Va. — The Tusculum University women’s volleyball team needed a fifth-set for the second-straight night, dropping the rare Wednesday (Oct. 23) match to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The Pioneers (8-12, 6-6 SAC) fell in the five-setter to the Cavaliers (10-10, 4-7 SAC) by scores of 25-20, 18-25, 26-28, 25-21, 14-16.

In the match, Tusculum tallied its fifth-most attempts ever in a contest and most since 2001. Additionally, the dig total ranks seventh all-time and was the highest amount since 2012.

UVA Wise had three players reach double-figures in kills: Riley Brandon (17), Kaylee Scarce (16), and Morgan Blevins (11). Piper Suddeth (25) and Lily Gutierrez (17) combined for 42 assists, while Abigail Curtis notched 32 digs. Cassidy Farley was credited with 12 total blocks (seven solo, five assists).

Martina Foster tied her career-high with 18 kills on a .341 hitting percentage, while McKayla Willey upped her collegiate-best to 18. Rounding out the scoring were Addison McLarty (8), Katherine Perrin (6), Karris Oller (4), Madison Adkins (3), Olivia Crowl (3), Jamianne Foster (2), and Whitney Thompson (1). Adkins tied her career-best with 50 assists as both Sofia De Los Mozos and Taylor Sanders landed a pair of aces. Amiranee Au upped her collegiate-high for the second-straight night, now totaling 35. Four other Pioneers reached double-digits in digs: De Los Mozos (21), Adkins (19), Sanders (18), and Macey Snapp (11). Martina Foster was credited with seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) for her best outing in college. Willey was just behind with her best of five (one solo, four assists).

UVA Wise hit .120 as a team with 60 kills and 32 errors on 234 total attempts. Tusculum hit .105 with 63 kills, 38 errors, and 237 total attacks. The Cavaliers were credited with more total blocks (19-12), while the Pioneers tallied more assists (61-55), service aces (6-5), and digs (128-123).

Tusculum has the weekend off before hitting the road one more time to close out October. The Pioneers will visit the Catawba Indians on Tuesday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m.
