The Greeneville football team needed somebody to provide a spark on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs against long-time foe Anderson County, and Tegan Begley stepped up to provide it. For that he has been named the Greene Sports Zone Player of the Week.
Begley came into Friday’s game with just 12 carries on the season, but against the Mavericks he ran the ball 21 times and picked up 114 yards. In Begley the Devils found a weapon that could move the chains in tough spots, which kept them in front and kept the Mavericks’ offense off the field. His most important carry came with 1:05 left in the game when he ran through tackles on the way to a 26-yard score that proved to be the game winner. On defense Begley had five tackle and a pass break up while playing a big role in slowing Anderson County’s vaunted ground game.
