Fundamentals, such as bunt the ball into the ground, hit the cutoff man, and take the extra base, are the most valuable tools that a baseball player can possess. South Greene’s Dustin Crum and North Greene’s Aidan Halley took it a step further proving that throwing strikes is just as important in giving your team a chance to win in the end. Both went the distance on the mound, scattering 8 hits, allowing 3 runs, walking 2, and striking out 10. In the end, the Rebels took advantage of several Huskey miscues to come away with the 3-0 win.
South Greene got on the board in the second inning as Crum started the inning off with a blast to left for a double, advanced to third on a balk and scored when Seth Franklin’s ground ball was misplayed. Levi Treadway followed up with a single allowing runners to be at first and second. After a strikeout and an infield fly, it seemed that Halley had avoided further damage when he coaxed Jacob Susong into a ground ball to second. The throw, however, was wide of first, allowing Franklin to score an unearned run, making the score 2-0.
Pitching continued to dominate the day until South Greene took advantage of a base on balls, followed by a hit batter, and a Franklin infield single to score the third and final run of the game in the top of the sixth.
The Rebels were led at the plate by Crum and Treadway who both went 2 for 4, while the Huskies collected singles from Isaac Gaby and Colton Robbins.
Both teams will take the field once again on Saturday when North Greene hosts Cloudland at noon and the South Greene hosts Grainger at 5:30.
