MURFREESBORO – The South Greene volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw on Wednesday morning in the Class A State Tournament and fell to championship favorite Eagleville 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-14) in the state semifinals.
“We knew this was going to be a tough matchup, Eagleville has a great team,” South Greene coach Stephen Gregg said. “I didn’t like our effort early in the match, it was like the girls came in stunned. But there is not much you can do to help nerves. As the match went on we got better. Sometimes when you run into buzzsaw like this you can’t fix everything, and there were just too many things we needed to fix to be in this match. We knew we were going to have to have close to a flawless game, and we didn’t get that. Eagleville is as good as team I’ve seen this year.”
South Greene’s time in Murfreesboro is not over, but the Lady Rebels fall into the consolation bracket. They will play Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences on Thursday at 12 p.m. central time. If South Greene beats CSAS it will play at 5 p.m. in the third-place game.
“We have to come back and have pride in who we are,” Gregg said. “We have an opportunity to win two more games. We have to put this one behind us, and come back tomorrow with more confidence.”
Wednesday’s action started with Eagleville jumping in front 7-0 in the first set with Campbell Leathers scoring on a kill and tip and Kaylen Baker getting a pair of aces to fall.
The lead grew to 14-3 with Brylee Bain scoring on a tip, block and kill.
Emma Padgett got an ace to land for South Greene’s first offensive point and Whitney Reaves followed with a kill that made it 14-6.
The success was short lived, and Eagleville pulled out to a 23-7 lead. Late in the set South Greene did get a block from Reagan Arrowood, and a kill and an ace from Kortnei Bailey.
In the second set South Greene got three kills from Padgett early, but Eagleville got five slams from Leathers on the way to a 10-3 lead.
The Lady Eagles moved the ball around with Bain earning two kills and Baker earning two kills on the way to an 18-5 lead. Leathers hammered three more big swings on the way to a 25-8 victory.
In the third set South Greene showed some fight early and stayed within striking distance. Padgett landed two kills, Bailey got a kill to fall and Arrowood came up with a block two stay within two points at 8-6. Back to back misses from the Lady Eagles tied things at 8-8.
Bailey kept it close at 13-9 with a tip, but the Lady Eagles finished the day on a 12-5 run. Baker scored on a pair of aces while Leathers landed two more kills in the 25-14 win.
