The Greeneville girls were able to trade blows with Webb School of Knoxville for most of the night, but in the closing stretch they could not get shots to fall and took a 60-47 loss in their opening game of the Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic.
“When we get five players on the floor that are hungry to win, we’ll be ok. But right now I can’t find those five players,” Greeneville coach Annette Watts said. “I can’t ask anymore of Kyle (Jobe), Maria (Lyde) and Abby (Adkins), but the rest of the bunch has to step up. We have to know our offenses, we work on them every day. We have great offenses that we can’t run because they don’t want the ball.”
Greeneville started the second half trailing 28-21, and that deficit grew to 32-21 after Webb’s Kyndall Mays scored four points inside. Abby Adkins answered with six points in the paint for the Lady Devils, and when Kyla Jobe nailed a pull-up triple Greeneville closed the gap to 36-33 with 3:45 left in the quarter.

Maria Lyde made it a two-point game at 37-35 when she grabbed a loose ball near the Lady Devils’ baseline and dropped in a short jumper from the block. With 1:41 left Lyde made one of two at the free-throw line to cut the Lady Spartans’ lead to 39-38.
Webb’s Meeyah Green scored the final four points of the third quarter to put the Lady Spartan’s in front 43-38.
Jobe got the fourth quarter started with a triple from the corner. Lyde then made a quick spin around Mays for a lay in, and with 4:24 left in the game Adkins sent a pass from the block to Jobe on the short corner for a jump shot that even the score at 45-45.
From there the Lady Spartans got hot from behind the arc, and Greeneville’s offense faded fast, finding just two more points the rest of the night.
“We let a kid shooting the three beat us tonight. And that’s with us telling them not to help off her,” Watts said. “I thought we did a good job of defending Green. But we have to be disciplined enough to do what the game plan says. Then on offense they started double-teaming (Jobe) and tripled teamed us inside, and we got stuck.”
Cailyn Taylor nailed back-to-back three-pointers for Webb and then Zahnyah Rockett added another that put the Lady Spartans in front 54-45. From there Webb played the rest of the game at the free-throw line and took the 60-47 win.

Friday’s action started with Webb using three-pointers from Harper Ladd, Rockett and Ivy Napier to take an 11-4 lead. Lyde gave Greeneville a little spark when she grabbed two offensive rebounds before making her way to the foul line for two free points. Jobe ended the opening period with a short jumper from the left block that cut Webb’s lead to 11-10.
Adkins began the second quarter with a hook shot that put the Lady Devils in front briefly at 12-11. Taylor followed with a pair of three-pointers for 17-12 Webb advantage.
Lyde and Adkins carried Greeneville with their inside presence in the period, and with 57 seconds left in the first half Adkins drove through traffic for a layup that cut Webb’s lead to 23-21.
Taylor sank her third three-pointer of the period, and a steal by Corisa Lowery led to a layup by Rockett for Webb’s 28-21 halftime lead.
Taylor led Webb with 17 points on Friday. Green scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but the highly touted junior scored seven of those points at the free-throw line and was held to 4-of-14 shooting.
Lyde led Greeneville with 18 points and turned in a tough defensive effort that frustrated Greene for much of the night. Jobe had 15 points and five assists, and Adkins had 10 points and eight rebounds.
