West Greene prepares for a tough challenge on Thursday night as the Buffaloes hit the road to visit Erwin
and the Unicoi County Blue Devils.
“This is probably the best Unicoi’s looked in a long time. I know they’ve got two losses, but it’s a
combined four points. And they’ve lost to two undefeated teams in Happy Valley and Gatlinburg-
Pittman. And if you talk to both of those coaches, they’re like, ‘we’re lucky to have won that ball
game.’ For us, we’ve really got to go compete this week,”West Greene head coach Evan Monroe stated.
It’s another short week for a West Greene team that plays their second of three Thursday night games
on their schedule this year. It’s an old rival from their time in 3A. It’s the 11th-straight season that both
teams have played one another and it’s the 21st meeting overall. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series
17-3 and have won two-straight in the series.
West Greene is still searching for that elusive first win of the year and is 0-8 (0-2) going into week nine, while
Unicoi is 6-2 (3-1) going in to Friday’s action.
The Blue Devil offense is averaging 35.12 points per game. Their defense is allowing an average of 21.25
points per game. They have won three-straight games and have scored 42+ in all three wins.
West Greene’s offense averages 10.37 points per game and their defense is giving up 39.25 points per
contest. They have allowed 40+ points in each of their last five losses.
The Blue Devils will be led by a veteran QB with great skill guys and a big offensive line to compliment
him. West Greene’s young core will be looking for more development against one of the top opponents
they’ll see all year.
Coach Monroe’s three keys to the game are scoring, limiting explosive plays, and winning the special
teams battle.
“It’d be nice for us to come out and play a full four quarters, compete for four quarters,
and see if we can make a little noise and try to upset somebody,” Coach Monroe said.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM inside of Gentry Stadium.
