COSBY – West Greene’s offense was stifled by Cosby’s defense on Friday night and started the season with a tough 34-7 loss to the reigning Region 1-1A champions on the road.
Cosby’s first drive of the night ended with an interception, but when the Eagles got the ball back they used a long drive and a short punch in by their big back, Mason Williams. The extra point made it 7-0 with 4:46 left in the first quarter.
West Greene’s defense set up its offense again in the second quarter and this time the Buffaloes were able to even the score at 7-7. On fourth and 15 Austin Brown sent a pass to Peyton Hilton and the rangy receiver pulled it in for a touchdown.
Cosby responded quickly though with a David Baker TD run to regain the lead at 14-7 before halftime.
The Eagles came out strong in the third quarter, leaning on their ground game to extend the lead. David Baker broke through for multiple scores as Cosby’s offense wore down the Buffaloes’ defense.
West Greene struggled to move the ball and failed to convert key possessions.
Cosby’s defense controlled the second half, forcing turnovers and sacks that kept West Greene pinned n Eagles territory.
A muffed punt set up another Eagles touchdown as the game slipped away for the Buffaloes. By the end of the third, Cosby held a commanding lead at 34-7.
In the fourth quarter, Cosby continued to dominate on both sides of the ball. Another fumble recovery and a strong defensive front ensured West Greene never regained momentum.
Cosby’s rushing attack and physical defense defined the night. West Greene’s early answer wasn’t enough to keep pace as the Eagles imposed their will in the trenches.
Big plays and ball control allowed Cosby to pull away decisively. West Greene showed early flashes but couldn’t finish drives. The Eagles ability to punch in goal line looks proved to be the difference.
West Greene will be back in action on Thursday, looking to earn their first win of the young season against North Greene in Baileyton.
