The West Greene girls will bring a young squad into the 2025-26 campaign, but the Lady Buffs will also bring plenty of experience to the hardwood and that should fans of the blue gold excited for basketball season.

Coach Betsy Shaw said, “I have zero seniors this year, but I’m blessed to have such a great group of girls, this is a great group, on and off the court.”

The Lady Buffaloes only lost one player to graduation form last years team, but it was a big loss in Morgan Brown, who led the Lady Buffs in almost every statistical category last season.

The Lady Buffaloes were 13-14 last season but finished above .500 in the conference at 6-5.

Shaw says “Our goal this year is to get a bit better each day and finish the season better than we did last year. Just get better.”

Joie Shipley figures to be a force to be reckoned with again this year. Shipley was injured in the final game of the regular season and missed the post season.

Shaws says “Joie missed all of summer ball but was involved in the day-to-day team activities, so all she really missed was playing time but she’s practicing and looks like she hasn’t missed a beat.”

Shipley is a 6’ junior that posted a double-double on a regular basis and excels on the defensive side as one of the area’s top shot blockers for the past two years.

Shipley isone of three Players in Shaw’s arsenal in the six-foot range. Junior Madison Wagner and sophomore Payton Norton are both post players and combined with Shipley will form a wall around the basket.

The Justis twins, Sarah and Emily, are back for their junior season. Emily will be directing traffic at the point guard position while Sarah will try and gather any rebounds that go astray.

Neveah Fillers is also a junior and will see significant playing time at one of the guard spots. As a sophomore Fillers was on the court a fair amount of the time and made an impact.

Katelyn Begines is back for her junior year as well and West Greene will count on her to provide points from the perimeter.

Kaylee Gulley and Morgan Moody are a pair of sophomores who return to add depth to the post rotation.

Kahlie Edward’s is only a freshman and could make an impact for the Lady Buffs this season. The Lady Buffs have six freshmen on the team to go along with six sophomores and six juniors.

The lady Buffaloes have 18 players on the roster this season between varsity and junior varsity and Shaw says, “With 18 players we’ll go with whoever has the hot hand”.

But the largest luxury acquisition may be in the form of an assistant coach. Shelby Davenport was an all-conference player at cross county rival North Greene just a few years ago has joined the coaching staff. Shaw said about Davenport, “She brings a lot of experience to the court.”

The young Lady Buffaloes kick off their season as they hit the hardwood November 18 at University High.
