MURFREESBORO – On Wednesday afternoon, 36 of the state’s best athletes joined together at Tucker Theatre for the 2025 TSSAA Mr. & Miss Basketball Ceremony. Greeneville junior Trey Thompson was named a finalist for Class 3A’s Mr. Basketball for the second-consecutive season and finished runner-up again in 2025.
“It feels amazing to be honored once again. I’m glad I have my teammates here this year with me,” Thompson said.
Upperman sophomore Ty Cobb took home this year’s award and preceded Fulton’s Tyler Lee. Trey Thompson and Stone Memorial’s Cade Capps were named finalists and runner-up both years.
Thompson’s season was littered with accomplishments that ranged from scoring his 2,000th point, winning District 2-3A Player of the Year, winning District 2-3A Tournament MVP, winning Region 1-3A Tournament MVP, and becoming Greeneville’s all-time leading scorer. He also led Greeneville to a District 2-3A regular season and tournament championship, the Region 1-2A championship, and the Greene Devils’ first trip back to the state tournament in three seasons.
His regular season averages consisted of 24 points per game with 10 rebounds per game to go along with it. He led Greeneville to a 25-11 record.
With this year’s nomination, Thompson is now a part of a rare and elite group of Greeneville talent to be named as two-time Mr. Basketball finalists. Current Maryland point guard Jakobi Gillespie was a two-time finalist and winner his senior year.
“It’s been great. It’s always great to come down and get to see our kids recognized. It’s awesome that Trey, as a sophomore and junior, was nominated as a finalist. He’s done a great job at making himself better and it’s really paying off for him. We’re just super proud of him,” Coach Woolsey said.
Even though he and coach Brad Woolsey made the trip up to Murfreesboro and left empty handed for the second year in-a-row, they have their eyes on the bigger prize. The Greene Devils compete in the Class 3A State Tournament this week and have aspirations to bring another gold ball back to Greeneville.
Woolsey stated, “Thursday is all we’ve got. That’s all our focus is going to be on. We’ve got to play great defense, take care of the ball, and do all the little things it takes to win at tournament time. We’re going to try and do that and hopefully get it done.”
Thompson spoke about this week with one simple thought. “Just one game at a time. We’ve got to focus on Munford on Thursday and then go on from there.”
If Greeneville and Upperman were to both win their opening games on Thursday, they’d meet in the semifinal round with a chance to advance to Saturday’s state championship. With the chance to play Cobb just days after not winning the award, the level-headed junior from Greeneville has zero thoughts of revenge. He said, “Just another game. I bring my juice every single game and try my hardest every single game. Nothing changes.”
Greeneville’s journey in the Class 3A State Tournament begins Thursday at 11:00 AM CST versus Munford.
