NEWBERRY, S.C. — Kaden Rodriguez scored the tiebreaking goal in the 82nd minute as Newberry College earned a 2-1 win over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer Saturday night.
After being delayed by 90 minutes at the start by a storm that forced the Tusculum women’s game with Newberry to be suspended after 15 minutes, the Pioneers (1-4-0, 0-2-0 SAC) seemed poised to earn a draw with the Wolves (3-0-1, 1-0-1 SAC) before Rodriguez netted the game-winner off an assist from Brayden Martinez at 81:24.
Newberry went up 1-0 at 13:32 on a penalty kick goal from Ben Curtis, but Tusculum came back to tie the match at 1-1 as Jean Grah scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Hugo Le Floch.
The Pioneers had six shots on goal in the match, including four in the second half, but Wolves keeper Charlie Clark kept Tusculum off the scoreboard for the final 70 minutes with a total of four saves.
Noe Delmotte had one save for the Pioneers, who were outshot 11-10 by Newberry in the match. Both teams had three corner kicks, and the Pioneers were called for 14 fouls to 12 for the Wolves.
Tusculum will travel to nationally-ranked Anderson on Saturday, Sept. 27 for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Trojans, whose match at Mars Hill on Friday night was postponed due to bad weather.
