North Greene volleyball opened up the season on Monday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 26-24, 25-20) over Washburn at home to begin the season with a win.
“Our communication was good. We were hustling pretty good. We had a rough start. Serving was one of our main issues today. But I think we’re going to get in the gym and get some practice and hopefully get better at our serving,” Lady Huskies Head Coach Emaline Erwin said.
Matti Phillips and Kinlea Eastep led the way with a team-high five kills each. Josie Graham and Tralyn Southerland delivered three kills each. Graham had two blocks at the net and two aces. Southerland led the team with four aces in service. Cadie McDevitt was superb from the service line and compiled three aces also. North Greene combined for 14 aces.
“Matti was getting great kills. Josie had some awesome kills in the middle. Tralyn had some good kills too, so I’m proud of all of them,” Coach Erwin bragged.
The first set was competitive until North Greene broke away at the end with a 25-20 win. They reached a game-high seven service errors in that set, but also backed it up with seven aces to counter it.
The second set was even more competitive with the Lady Huskies fighting until the end to hang on to a 26-24 win. They trailed 20-18 and 22-21 before scoring three-straight to go ahead 24-22. Washburn tied it 24-24 with two-consecutive scores, but a huge kill by Graham followed by an ace from Graham helped North Greene weather the storm and win 26-24.
“It just took some energy, effort, and hard work. Sometimes we decide to get comfortable and that’s when we start making mistakes. They fought it out and I’m proud of them,” Coach Erwin said.
North Greene led for almost the entire third set, but had to endure a strong Washburn run at the end before reaching the finish line. They led by as much as 23-14 before losing the next five volleys. Southerland helped end it all with a shot that Washburn returned out of bounds.
The Lady Huskies started the season 1-0 with a sweep over Washburn. They are back in action on Tuesday at home with Cherokee. The action is set to begin at 5 p.m.
“We’re going to have to keep communicating, working hard, and getting our serves in. That’s what we’re going to have to do,” Coach Erwin left off with.
